Impressive Brentor

Breath-taking natural beauty, spectacular views, history and quiet country walks can all be found at Brentor, just 15 minutes from Primrose Cottage B&B.

Brentor is one of the most impressive rock outcrops in Dartmoor.

  • With St Michael Of The Arch Angel Church at its top, it makes a distinctive and famous silhouette on the Dartmoor skyline.
  • The church stands 1,110 feet above sea level on an extinct, volcanic cone.
  • The tor is unusual as it is one of the few on Dartmoor not to be made of granite, it is formed from basaltic lava which flowed some 350 million years ago into a shallow sea that covered the area during the Lower Carboniferous and Devonian periods.
  • It’s a steep, but relatively short climb to the summit and impressive Brentor, with spectacular views from start to finish. There is plenty to see on the way up to the church to impress, including the remains of an Iron Age earth-walled enclosure on the slopes of the tor.
  • There is a magnificent view from the churchyard in clear weather, with bleak Dartmoor to the east, Plymouth Sound and Whitsand Bay to the south, the Tamar Valley and Bodmin Moor to the west, and the heights of Exmoor just visible in clear weather to the north.
  • It is an ancient site – the current church is surrounded by an Iron Age earth-walled hill-fort (150BC – 50AD).
  • The dedication to St. Michael is common for churches in high places – there are nearly 800 in England alone – perhaps the most famous being the abbey fortress of Saint Michael’s Mount on the Cornish coast.
  • The little church itself – at only 11.3 metres long and 4.4 metres wide – is steeped in history and receives thousands of visitors every year. It has seating for around 70 people but can fit up to 90. Another 40 lie buried beneath the church’s granite floor.
  • Nearby Tavistock is known as the Gateway to Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage sites. A classic West Country Market Town. Tavistock has a range of beautiful, local independent shops on its high street offering a truly special shopping, for more information to whet your appetite read our blog
